REAL Playground site plan
Imagine a space where creative and adventurous play thrives, a space that is a testament to our school's vision and the students' enthusiasm. This has been one of our school's longest dreams. Among the elements we originally planned for the area, the Makerspace and the raised-bed garden have already been brought to life, thanks to the community's efforts and the generosity of our donors.
We envision a playground teeming with children joyfully climbing, swinging and playing. Picture our students exploring nature-inspired play structures made from sustainable materials, creating their own games, and taking responsibility for their little kingdom - REAL Adventure Park.
Project update
13 January 2025: Stage 1 of the REAL Adventure Park project has officially been completed! REAL Ground is now certified safe by TÜV! A six-year dream came to life in just six months! Students learned the story and how to engage with this "living, breathing garden of play." Starting next week, they will start playing here during their breaks. Don’t miss the designer’s thoughtful letter here, in which he shares the vision and philosophy behind this one-of-a-kind space.
4 September 2024: Our community rolled up their sleeves and cleared the playground area together. In just 1,5 hours, we emptied an entire container worth of stuff and tidied up the whole space.
14 June 2024: We have the final playground design, featuring an agility track, a hill with loose parts to build, a tunnel, and a climbing and lookout tower.
23 May 2024: A community planning session brought together children, parents, and educators to reflect on and share ideas for natural play spaces. We built four models from natural materials.
The backing of generous donors allows REAL School to continue operating its programmes to provide stability and community for displaced families from Ukraine for over 2.5 years now.
Full-time students: 15 students successfully finished the 2023/2024 academic year at REAL School’s British-accredited international programme. This year, we still have 6 displaced children with us from our original cohort over two years ago. There are 4 children on the waiting list to enter the school from kindergarten, whom we can only admit if funding is available.
Summer camps: 15 Ukrainian children were offered financial support to join our summer camps, cultivating their creativity, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, sustainability mindset and skill set. This year, we will continue to organise weekend programmes and camps to scale the impact of REAL School’s model and to reach even more children.
Saturday school: 60-80 children attend every week, engaging in art, dance, Ukrainian reading and writing, soft skills, ecology, and basic English classes. We also organise regular English and Hungarian classes and special info sessions for adult refugees to help them settle in Hungary. Thousands of people from Ukraine still enter Hungary every day to find refuge.
Ukrainian learning hub "EcoSpace": 70+ children studied full-time here for the last two years, where traditional Ukrainian education was combined with REAL School’s project-based learning. Their “Who am I” project tells the story of displaced children and teachers through art. Initially started by REAL School and Ukrainian displaced educators, this school was made possible by our generous donors. “EcoSpace” is now becoming a fully licensed school with a long-term home and government funding.
She not only improved her language skills but also developed crucial life skills such as discipline, teamwork, organization, and—most importantly—how to study, negotiate, and collaborate with others. These foundational skills became the cornerstone of her success. - Yuliia Savenko, Parent (Project: RSBP UA Support)
When the war in Ukraine began, we were faced with the immense challenge of relocating to a new country. REAL School Budapest became a lifeline for us, offering my daughter a place to continue her education from March 2022 to June 2023. This opportunity was invaluable, providing stability during an uncertain time and fostering a welcoming environment that transcended language barriers.
Initially, my daughter’s English proficiency was limited, but the unwavering support from the educators helped her overcome this obstacle. She not only improved her language skills but also developed crucial life skills such as discipline, teamwork, organization, and—most importantly—how to study, negotiate, and collaborate with others. These foundational skills became the cornerstone of her success.
After completing her time at REAL School, we moved to Italy, and my daughter integrated seamlessly into her new high school. Despite the typical challenges teenagers face when adapting to a new environment, she thrived, confident in her ability to navigate an international society. Her academic performance never lagged behind her peers, and she even exceeded expectations, participating as a judge in Italian debates—a skill she mastered at REAL School. Today, she is a successful student at a scientific liceum in Italy, and I attribute her smooth transition and achievements to the education and support she received at REAL School Budapest.
REAL School served as an essential bridge between Ukraine and Italy, preparing her not only academically but socially and emotionally. Without this experience, I believe her integration into a new culture and education system would have been far more challenging.
I am deeply thankful to the D2R Foundation, Barna, and the entire REAL School team for providing my daughter with such an enriching and transformative experience. Sharing our story is a small way to give back to a community that gave us so much.

Due to D2R Foundation support all these families found the place in Budapest, in a new country for them, where they could attend and feel themselves as home. Due to the feedback of the families, this feels like having a big friendly family and support in this new circumstances. Saturday school, for sure, made a huge in the wellbeing of its attendees. - Marta Barancsikova, Saturday school coordinator (Project: Saturday School)
In the end of February 2022, when the full scale war started in Ukraine, a lot of people were forced to leave their houses and fled to different countries and cities. In early March 2022 REAL School Budapest in collaboration with Ukrainian Association Unity opened a unique Saturday school for Ukrainian refugee families, which served not only as an educational and art center, but played an important role in preserving wellbeing of the 150 families that attended it.
It all became possible only because of D2R Foundation support, that from the beginning of spring 2022 and till nowadays is supporting the mentioned Saturday school.
Why the Saturday school is unique and how many families benefit from it?
From March 2022 there were classes and activities for the next age groups:
Kids:
Age 3-4
Age 5-6
Age 7-8
Age 9-11
Age 13-17
There were the following activities and classes offered to the kids: Hungarian language, English language, Maths, Arts, Drama, Dance, Ukrainian school subjects (Ukrainian history, Ukrainian literature and language), and many many more.
For Adults:
Hungarian language course (2 groups)
English language course (2 groups)
Consultations with the lawyers
Group and individual sessions with the psychologists
Art and creative workshops for connecting Ukrainian refugees with the local community etc.
Moreover, the majority of teachers of Saturday school are themselves refugees. So in this way, they could also make some money in the new country, which was also an important factor for their adaptation.
We are hugely thankful to D2R for creating this opportunity for Ukrainian families in need! You can find the photos in the Photoalbum

We are thankful to D2R Foundation for creating the opportunity for Ukrainian kids to learn and pracise the Dream to Reality methodology. We believe, that this basis will serve them in the future well, when they will return to Ukraine and will impact in rebuilding it. - Szavcsuk Irina, EcoSpace coordinator (Project: Ecospace)
In March-April 2022, when 150+ Ukrainian families were attending the Saturday school by REAL School and Ukrainian Association “Unity” - we’ve conducted a survey and asked the families about what schools are they attending.
It became clear very soon, that the majority of the families (85%) didn’t enroll their kids to Hungarian school system, as at that time all of them were expecting they will arrive back to Ukraine in summer 2022.
Understanding that the kids are staying home the whole days (sitting in front of the laptops and following the Ukrainian curriculum online) - we understood that something definitely should be done with this unhealthy situation. Can you imagine an 8-year-old sitting in front of the computer at home 5 days a week?
So, we turned to D2R Foundation with the hope that for at least these few months (May-August 2022), until the families go back home - we can find for these kids a safer solution, which will be better for their physical and mental health rather than sitting at home. It will also allow their parents to search for a job, rather than sit at home with the kids.
And the D2R Foundation supported this initiative and allowed Ukrainian Association “Unity” with the budget, that was enough to pay the salaries of 4 full-time and additional several part-time teachers. 70 kids were studying and playing from 8:30 till 17:00 Monday to Friday in spring and summer of 2022. The kids and the teachers received beautiful plant based warm lunches from the Planteen and also had snacks twice a day - in the morning and in the afternoon.
In summer 50 Ukrainian kids attended the summer camp on lake Balaton.
In summer 2022 it was clear that the war persists and the families are not returning to Ukraine yet. There was the need in continuing their education in Ukrainian language, and Ukrainian Association Unity founded the budget to cover the building and the salaries to 24 Ukrainian refugee teachers that were teaching 70 Ukrainian kids following the Ukrainian curriculum. However, the additional budget was needed to cover the costs of Ukrainian educational platform (Liko education). Instead of Ukrainian curriculum, we wanted to continue to educate the leaders of the future about sustainability and values that REAL School Budapest follows. For that - we asked the budget from D2R Foundation and these money was aimed at project based learning and expenses connected to it. Also, the kids were attending REAL School building and the learned D2R onsite. They were having the lunches and snacks from The Planteen when they visited - and these expenses were also covered by D2R Foundation.
We are thankful to D2R Foundation for creating the opportunity for Ukrainian kids to learn and pracise the Dream to Reality methodology. We believe, that this basis will serve them in the future well, when they will return to Ukraine and will impact in rebuilding it.

D2RF is a Hungarian non-profit foundation with public benefit organization status. In pursuit of its goals, the foundation carries out the following public benefit activities: [Section 34 (1)(a) of Act CLXXV of 2011]
Tax Benefits of Donating to D2RF
The public benefit organization offers companies tax advantages for their donations. Here's how it works:
Treat the donation as a business expense: Companies can deduct the donation from their taxable income as a regular business expense.
Plus a tax benefit:
Companies can further reduce their pre-tax profits by 20% of the donation if it supports the public benefit activities of D2RF. This gives them an additional 20% upside beyond treating the donation as an expense.
For long-term donation contracts (i.e., committing to donate at least once per year for three or more consecutive years), the pre-tax profit reduction increases to 40% of the donation.
By both expensing the donation and benefiting from these additional reductions, companies maximize the financial impact of their contributions.
